A screened porch can create a defined place for a meal, a quiet morning or an evening with friends. Screens allow outdoor air through, so the room still responds to the weather and seasons.

Discuss when you want to use the space, how much sun it receives and the views you want to preserve. Those priorities help with the location of seating, screens and doors.

Make the openings part of the design.

Screen panels, framing and door placement affect both the appearance and everyday use of the porch. Think about the view when seated, the route to the stairs and how large furniture will move in or out.

Ask about the screen material and the maintenance or replacement method for the proposed system. If pets will use the porch, include their habits in the discussion before materials are selected.

• Doors: swing, clear opening and the route to the yard.
• Furniture: seating and dining layout without blocking circulation.
• Care: cleaning access and how an individual damaged screen is replaced.

Understand the starting structure.

Screening an already covered area is different from adding a roof and screens to an open deck. The supporting structure, connections and proposed enclosure need to be evaluated for the actual work.
